It is with heavy hearts that we say farewell to Peter Collis, our greatly loved choir member who passed away recently at the age of 94, having been part of our musical family for nearly four decades. When our choir was established in 1986, Peter was there as a founding member, and his commitment remained unwavering for 39 years; his love of barbershop singing was undimmed. For Peter, barbershop was not just a hobby but a lifelong passion.

Although he stopped singing regularly with us in his eighties, his age and health issues didn’t stop him coming along to rehearsals when he could. Even after turning 90, he was there listening—and often joining in for a song or two—and he especially enjoyed our pub nights. It was sad when, last year, his health meant he could no longer join us. We were pleased to be able to send him a recording of us performing some familiar songs last week as he celebrated his 94th birthday, before he passed away at the weekend.

Perhaps what we’ll remember most about Peter was his genuine warmth toward every member, regardless of age or experience. Whether a nervous newcomer or a seasoned performer, everyone found Peter ready for a chat—and boy, could he chat; he had so many stories to tell from his long life. He bridged the generations in our choir, connecting our founding history with our future aspirations. While we have a handful of members who’ve been with us for 15, 20, or even 30 years—impressive commitments in their own right—Peter’s 39-year journey stands apart. Some of our choir’s history has indeed gone with him, but his legacy lives on in every song we sing, every rehearsal we hold, and every new member we welcome with the openness and warmth he showed to all.

How fitting that the closing song we sing at the end of each rehearsal, “The Irish Blessing,” should carry such meaning as we remember him. We have stood together so many times, Peter among us, singing those beautiful words.

May the road rise up to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back,
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
And the rains fall soft upon your fields,
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.

His voice may have fallen silent, but the harmony he helped create will echo through our choir for generations to come.

Rest in peace, Peter.
